Miss Orbit

Miss Orbit was the first live piece I performed post Covid lockdown. It was a commission from the Source Arts Centre, Tipperary created by Iseli-Chiodi company. In its initial stages Miss Orbit was inspired by a post lockdown feeling of having time and space and a sense of calm. A step outside the rat race and the busy body. It was a treat to work this way post lockdown and I learnt a lot about my body during this time. Only doing what was needed and trying to resist urges to do more. To do too much !

A theme of orbiting quickly developed and became a focal point as we traced space and wove in and around one another. We were also taking inspiration from Edward Hopper paintings. How he made the most subtle situations hold space.

“Standing on the terrace of the Source Arts Centre, you are witnessing three women gathered behind the glass panels of a theatre hall. Pushed out of their life’s orbit they slow down to rebuild their steps with unbreachable confidence.

Orbiting like wandering stars? heroines of no novel? bewildered animals? Unique and universal, they randomly intersect at the crossroad of past images and projected futures. They trace their way, swirling behind the glass window like the dolls of ancient automatons, sitting in loneliness like characters of a Hopper painting.”

Miss Orbit was performed as a durational work on Culture Night 2020.
